Land of Gods
San’in is often called the land of the gods — and for good reason. The region is believed to be the birthplace of Japan's creation myths, and its landscape is home to sacred sites that continue to pulse with spiritual energy.
Our itineraries can include guided visits to shrines, mountain ascetic hiking, or cultural exchange through kagura performances.
One of Japan's oldest and most revered shrines is Izumo Taisha, believed to host the annual gathering of all Shinto gods. Massive straw ropes and sacred rituals create a powerful atmosphere of divinity.
The main deity enshrined at Izumo Taisha is Okuninushi no Okami, who, according to the creation mythology, crafted Japan itself. He is often portrayed as the head of the kunitsukami, the gods of the earth, and was believed to be the original ruler of the terrestrial world.
Later, he also became the deity of good relationships and marriage. With this came the unique custom of clapping four times instead of the usual two during prayers—the first two for themselves, and the latter for their existing or desired partners and people they have connections with.
Mitokusan Sanbutsuji Temple, Nageire-do Hall, is a gravity-defying wooden temple clinging to the cliffs of Mount Mitoku.
Walk the path of pilgrims as you ascend to the hall, embodying the Shugendo tradition of spiritual endurance through nature.
The temple was built by a monk named Jikaku in 849, intended as a place of training for monks of the Tendai sect of Buddhism. Nageire-do Hall itself has been designated a national treasure, rumored to be one of Japan's oldest Shinto structures.
To see the historic temple, one must follow in the footsteps of Buddhist monks. With each step on the 40-minute walk up this 500-meter high cliff, feel yourself ascend to a higher plane.
Witness a Iwami Kagura performance, a vibrant sacred dance-drama passed down in Shimane that is filled with ritual, myth, and theatrical flair. Local communities perform it to honor the gods, blending entertainment with worship.
Somewhere in the flashes of color and pounding drums, discover tales as old as time, where heroes fight villains, gods battle demons, and the lines between good and bad balance on a blade's edge during striking, choreographed swordfights.
Discover intricate costumes held together by gold thread, sekishu washi paper masks highlight intricate expressions, and action, drama, and comedic interludes combine to create the perfect atmosphere for an enlightening local experience.
